Comparison of COVID-19-Related Tuberculosis Resource Reallocation in Afghanistan and Kyrgyzstan
Abstract: In 2020, the COVID-19 pandemic ravaged health systems worldwide. During this time, tuberculosis (TB) programs were particularly hard hit given the overlap in medical equipment, laboratory systems, and clinical expertise needed to combat both diseases. Afghanistan and Kyrgyzstan have experienced COVID-19 under very different contexts. Lockdowns and restrictions in Kyrgyzstan made it difficult for TB patients to access appropriate care, whereas the escalating conflict coupled with the difficulties of COVID-19 posed major challenges to delivering quality TB care in Afghanistan. Understanding the extent to which resources are reallocated will help program managers, policy-makers, donors, and implementers assess vulnerabilities in TB services and focus efforts to ensure minimal loss of progress in the fight to end TB in the post-COVID-19 era. This poster shares findings from a quality of TB services assessment and was presented at the 2021 Union Conference.
